Black bears are covered by a thick coat made up of two types of hair, including a soft, dense undercoat of fur for insulation, and long, coarse hairs that overlap and serve to keep the undercoat clean and dry. In the spring, bears shed their winter coats and may appear scraggly, but by summer their new coats are well established.
