Once, black bears were found throughout the State of Maine. As the areas were settled, fewer bears were found in the southern coastal sections of the state. Although agriculture has declined in Maine, and forests have regrown in these areas, black bears have been slow to recolonize these parts of the state, although they are sometimes seen. Most of the state has always been a stronghold for the Maine black bear.
